Love your description of NZ. It's definitely from someone who's been away - glad you're back. Agree about the crash. It takes about three years to aclimatise.
You need to get around the south island more - ghost towns have been a common feature of NZ since the gold rush ended. I'm not sure about your childhood memories, but the east coast is one of the poorest area of NZ and was before the european invasion - no change there. Talk to your elders.
We're still suffering from the reforms you mention - they rescued us as we had run out of foreign reserves (the new Labour govt literally went around asking people like my parents if they would lend funds and they did - we were in banana republic land but too proud to mention it). But, they sold assets to overseas owned companies, so a big chunk of NZ revenue goes overseas as dividends today. It screws us , but not as much as all the people taking advantage of our current high interest rates. That's incenting our banks to bankrupt us - you watch the next two years. Sounds mad, but the solution could be to buy shares and get in control.
